Battambang had suffering by confrontation, invading from Siem since 15th-18th centuries. With only one road parallel to the river, people built their houses disorderly along both sides of this road. At the location of todays Psar Nath was just an open-air market. At that time, dominant landmarks were numerous pagodas along both river banks and a Chinese temple. A rectangular fort called "Kampheng" was built in the late 1830s, with the palace of the "Lord Governor", today seat of the Provincial Governor.French, Seim convention date on 23rd March 1907, French enforced Siem to give Kingdom of Cambodia Battambang back and then Siem, supporting by Japanese, Siem insisted French to sign on convention to Siem again on 09th May 1941 but according to agreement of Wasinton dated Dec 17, 1946. French forced Siem to give the Battambang to Cambodia back until now. From 1926, a second urban development plan was created. The railway was constructed to link Battambang to Phnom Penh and the urban structure was extended to the west of the town until the railway line, featuring some important urban axes orienting on the railway station. Psar Nath market was built in 1936; a well designed Art Déco structure on the location of an open-air market at the river front is since considered to be a significant land mark for Battambang city. Many outstanding buildings like residential villas and significant public buildings were constructed during that period, some of them contributing to the urban heritage and unique character of Battambang until today. The urban development at the French colonial time was directed to the vision of a business and administrative centre of the colonial protectorate.
